Physical Therapy for Bursitis in Sheepshead Bay

June 23, 2017

Bursitis is a painful condition that results from an inflamed bursa. Bursae are fluid-filled sacs in several areas of the body that serve to cushion movement and reduce friction. Most commonly, bursitis happens as a result of repetitive stress or impact on a particular joint, such as the shoulder, elbow, or hip.  Bursitis can also be the result of an acute injury to the bursa. At Madison Physical Therapy in Sheepshead Bay, we are experienced in working with bursitis.  Physical therapy is an effective and non-invasive treatment option that can help alleviate your bursitis pain and get you back to full activity.

How to Avoid Bursitis

There are several ways to prevent the initial onset of bursitis.  Note that the chance of bursitis greatly increases with age and the majority of cases occur in patients over the age of 40.  With that being said, these few simple tips can help avoid bursitis in the first place:

  • When starting a new exercise regimen, gradually work up the number of repetitions

  • Condition yourself properly before any physical activity

  • Pay attention to joint pain and stap activity if pain occurs

How Physical Therapy Can Help

The simplest form of treatment for bursitis is utilizing the RICE principles - rest, ice, compress, and elevate your injury.  Your physical therapist at Madison PT in Sheepshead Bay will work with you to determine what other treatments you may need to ensure a speedy and full recovery.  Some treatments your physical therapist may recommend include:

  • Strengthening exercises

  • Maintained motion to avoid joint stiffness

  • After icing for a period, heat to promote blood flow and healing

At Madison PT in Sheepshead Bay, our physical therapists are dedicated to the well-being of our patients and will do everything in our power to alleviate pain.  We know that your bursitis can be a nagging and frustrating condition, and we will use our experience and expertise to help you work back to a full recovery.  Make an appointment today!
